The use of uncertainty and criticality measures in network planning of engineering projects by PERT networks is limited in practice because of their unreliability or complexity. The measures appear as inappropriate to support the definition of contractual obligations when based on uncertain information. The author proposes new uncertainty and criticality measures based on the identification and analysis by PERT-path technique of possible completion sequences of project activities. The measures prove to be effective in project planning and contracting. An algorithm and a stochastic analytical model suitable for the quantification of the measures concerned are proposed. A numerical example is developed. © 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd and IPMA

Given the increased discussion on the development of metrics to manage intangible resources, there is a need for a review of the most important tools available to managers for this purpose. This article reviews four measurement systems currently popular among practitioners: (i) human resource accounting; (ii) economic value added; (iii) the balanced scorecard; and (iv) intellectual capital. The...

A linear time algorithm for the Bottleneck Biconnected Spanning Subgraph problem is presented. This improves the hitherto best-known solution, which has a running time of 0( m + n log n), where m and n are the number of edges and vertices of the graph.

As European economic integration proceeds, this paper examines the integration of managerial elites in the major West European economies. It finds that top manager profiles in France, Germany and the United Kingdom have changed very little despite major internal and external pressures over the last two decades. French top managers still enjoy strong family and State connections. German managers...

Corporations are beginning to realize that the proverbial ‘if we only knew what we know’ also includes ‘if we only knew what our customers know.’ The authors discuss the concept of Customer Knowledge Management (CKM), which refers to the management of knowledge from customers, i.e. knowledge resident in customers. CKM is contrasted with knowledge about customers, e.g. customer characteristics a...
